Why wine tastings are fun!

Trying something new

One of the things I love to do is trying and tasting new wines. It is fun to discover a wine that is completely new, or even partly new because I had heard about it but not tried it yet. The joy with tasting is that it’s really never the same. Each bottle, each glass of wine is different. This is actually the case for the very same wine, as each vintage may be different due to weather, choices of the winemaker etc. In addition, when, where and how a wine is served may have an impact on how a wine is individually perceived. Because of this, opening a bottle is never dull. And even if the wine does not turn out to be a personal favorite, I can always appreciate the effort and love the winemaker did put into it.

A bit of context, more fun

A wine experience becomes even better when it’s shared with others that are open to a new tasting experience. This the main reason why I love to organize tasting sessions. Understanding the wine in the glass and why it tastes as it does, enjoying all of this and sharing it with others makes me happy. To better understand a wine some background information is helpful, and that is why during my tastings -without getting too technical- we always explore some important elements such as the geographic location, the climate, topography, the grapes and the choices the winemaker made, for example the use of oak. To better understand a specific wine region, in my tastings most of the times I stick to that one region. This also gives me the opportunity to talk about the history of the region. As history in Spain goes back a very long time, it’s just fascinating.

So for me, wine is not just a bottle filled with very tasty fermented grape juice. There is much more to understand, talk about and enjoy together with the people at the tasting.
