Mallorca wine region

The Balearic island of Mallorca is famous for its beautiful beaches, nature and capital Palma de Mallorca, hence every year many people spend their holiday here. But did you know Mallorca is home to beautiful wines, too? Mallorca offers a number of indigenous grapes that you won’t find elsewhere. So, Mallorca offers a unique tasting experience. Mallorca has two DO’s: Binisalem in the north and Pla I Levante in the south-east. In addition, wines can carry the label IGP Mallorca, meaning that the wine may come from the entire production zone on the island.

Tasted – ÀN/2 2022 – Ànima Negra

Bodega Ànima Negra was founded in 1994 when 2 Mallorquin friends started to make wine from indigenous grapes. This is a wine labelled IGP Mallorca and it revives three red grapes home to Mallorca: Callet (65%) supported by Manto Negro, Fogoneu and in addition a bit of the international grape Syrah. Vines are grown on Mallorca’s unique topsoil called Call Vermell – red clay mixed with limestone gravels or stones. The wine was matured just over a year in French and American oak.

My wine experience

The wine shows a medium ruby color that makes me think of pinot noir. Aromas of ripe red fruit with red cherry, red plum and black cherry. Though the wine is dry the palate has some sweet tones suggesting sweet cranberry. Medium acidity, medium alcohol, soft tannins lead to an accessible wine with a medium+, dry finish with a stoney or mineral touch.

Personally I like this wine a lot as it combines high quality with an authentic, different character. Elegant, fruity and accessible and at the same time complex. As this is a lighter style wine, it goes well with meat but also various tapas.

Conclusion

A great wine at a fair price
