Pagos de Antillón Garnacha Blanca 2022
The Somontano region
As mentioned in my earlier blog about Somontano, this DO has around 4,000 hectares of vineyards, making it one of many smaller wine regions in the country. Somontano receives sufficient rain and is a green part in the north of Aragon. In the hills close to the Pyrenees a number of lesser known indigenous grapes are grown and we also find Garnacha Blanca that is common in nearby Catalunya. Due to the nearby mountains, wines are grown at altitudes up to 1000 m and there is a cooling wind called cierzo. The combination of sunshine and warmth and the mentioned cooling effects gives good freshness to the wines.
Tasted – Pagos de Antillón Garnacha Blanca 2022 – The Wine Hunter Company
The Pagos de Antillón is a 100% Garnacha Blanca wine made in Antillón not far from Huesca at an altitude of 540 meters. It was aged for 3 months on its lees, bringing extra texture to the wine. The wine is made by The Wine Hunter Company that has various bodegas in Spain that focus on producing wine in limited quantities with a focus on sustainable agriculture. This wine was made in quite a small number of only 345 bottles.
My wine experience
The wine has a pale lemon color and shows aromas of citrus fruit with lemon, apple, some sweet pine fruit and a stoney edge. The wine has a surprising body, perhaps more than the aromas would suggest, combined with a notable freshness and a salty minerality.
Personally, I love the combination of the present ripe fruit, the body of the wine with the crispy sensation. I think it makes this a gastronomic wine that will do well with various dishes.
Conclusion
A great wine for a fair price
