Trepat 2022

Conca de Barberà region

Conca de Barberà is a lesser known region in Catalunya, quite close to the more famous Priorat (known for high quality reds) and Penedès (known for Cava) in North East Spain. Though Conca de Barberà is slightly more inland, we are still in the Mediterranean zone here. This means this wine region has some continental influences so during the night temperatures generally decrease which is good for keeping freshness in the wines. The region has been building recognition -though perhaps not that widely known- for a grape that is native to the region: Trepat. This grape is used in both red wine as well as rosados and despite the thick skin the grape produces a light red color wine.

Tasted – Trepat 2022 – Josep Foraster

This 100% Trepat wine is made in the village of Montblanc in the south of Conca de Barberà. The wine is from old vines of more than 50 years planted at around 500 meters of altitude. It is interesting to note this wine from 2022 has only 12% alcohol which is quite low for a Spanish red wine from a zone that as mentioned has continental influences, but is still in a warm zone. The wine has matured on French oak for around 5 months.

My wine experience

The wine has a ruby color and the intensity or should I say transparency reminds me of pinot noir. It shows fresh red fruit such as raspberry and red cherry, combined with light herbs and pepper. The wine is medium bodied with medium alcohol and acidity. The medium to low tannins are soft. The wine has a medium finish and I think has the potential to further age for a few more years in bottle.

Personally I think this wine is very nice as it’s quite different. Definitely not the bolder style and you won’t find this type of wine in many other places in Spain. Elegant and fresh, accessible but still sufficiently complex and interesting. As this is a lighter style, it goes well with light meat but also fish dishes.

Conclusion

A good wine at a good price
